GEVANGENIS TONGEREN

DESIGN, CO-ORDINATION AND REALISATION EXHIBITION, TONGEREN, 2006.

The prison of Tongeren is the eldest prison in Belgium. This prison visit is all about the prisoners’ perceptions and feelings. In the small space of a prison cell all these experiences are intensified. Freedom of movement is minimal. And emotions are strongly experienced.

Fourteen cells are used to represent these feelings. The open structure is exactly the size of a prison cell: 2m50 to 2m80. In this cell two to three prisoners were often locked together 22 hours a day. Walk around in this structure and you’ll immediately see how small such a space is.
