TRADITIONAL GAMES BARN FOR
OPEN-AIR MUSEUM BOKRIJK, 2016
In June 2015, architects DE GOUDEN LINIAAL (based in Genk) have asked us to work with them on a new design for the traditional games barn at Bokrijk. Now, you can go and admire the redesigned barn with its indoor games, as well as the surrounding game courts.
Basic letters and figures combined with present-day techniques are being used as interactive graphic elements linking games from the past to modern-day ones. For example, the “sjoelbak” (a Flemish version of bagatelle) will still be recognizable as the game we all know, but with an extra dimension: the velocity of the discs will be displayed on the barn’s clay walls.
Using the barn’s old playthings, we have been patiently building a Rube Goldberg Machine. This contraption performs a simple, preconceived task by initiating a chain reaction. The recording thereof will be played back continuously inside the barn.
